Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded the contract for the construction of internal roads at Al-Quoz 3 and part of Al-Quoz 4 in the western part of the city to Dubai-based construction firm Wade Adams.

The contract is worth AED21.73m ($5.9m) and forms part of phase 1 of a AED1bn five-year plan to increase the number of paved internal roads within Dubai’s residential areas.

Phase 1 of the plan covers the Al-Quoz 2, 3 and 4 areas, as well as Hatta and Al-Qusais 3 residential areas. Phase 1 is expected to cost AED150m.

The scope of the works contract covers the construction of 9 kilometres of roads, including collector roads and local roads with roadside parking slots. It also includes light works, traffic signage, storm-water drainage services and road marking.

Work on the project will begin at the end of November, taking a total of 300 days to complete, according to the RTA.

In May this year, phase 1 contracts for the construction of the Al-Qusais 3 and part of Al-Quoz 4 roads were awarded, for a total cost of AED38m.

The contract for Hatta’s internal roads was scheduled to be tendered separately in the third quarter of 2012. No awards have been announced yet.

Phase 2 of the internal road project is due to start in 2013 and will cost AED140m, covering three residential districts: Muhaisna 2 and Al-Barsha South 1 and 2. Phase 3 is set to start in 2014, costing AED130m, and covers Al-Mamzar, Al-Nahdah 1 and Oud Mateena 2.

Phase 4 will start in 2015 and is set to cost AED140m, covering roads in Nad el-Sheba 4, Oud Mateena 1, and Khawaneej 2.

The final fifth phase will start in 2015, costing AED250m and covering road construction in Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1, Al Qusais Industrial Areas 3, 4 & 5, and Al Awir 1.
