Dubai raises water and electricity tariffs

19 February 2008
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is to raise water and electricity from 1 March, although locals will be exempt from the price rises.

The tariff level Dubai residents will pay will depend on their level of consumption.

The move is designed to reduce consumption levels. According to Dewa, 80 per cent of consumers will not be affected by the new tariff structure because they fall into the normal consumption category.

Currently, expatriates pay AED0.2/kWh for their electricity and AED0.03 a gallon for water.

From 1 March these will rise to between AED0.2/kWh and AED0.33/kWh, for both domestic and industrial users.

Water tariffs will range from AED0.03-0.04 a gallon for both domestic and industrial consumers.

Tariffs paid by local nationals will remain unchanged, at AED0.06/kWh for electricity and AED0.015 a gallon for water.
