Education in Kuwait

28 October 2012

The Gulf states typically offer a good standard of private education for the children of expatriates, and Kuwait is no exception

With more than 650 private schools teaching about 170,000 pupils, it has among the most developed private education facilities in the region.

Private education is available for pre-school, primary school and high school. Children can be educated under the British General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) system or the Indian Certificate of Basic Secondary Education (CBSE) system. They can also be taught under American and Canadian systems. A number of schools offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) qualification, while a few offer hybrid systems, whereby pupils are taught to US and UK standards, but also have the option of taking the IB. Country-specific schools tend to follow their nation’s national curriculums.

Many schools offer A-levels and equivalent qualifications, however some parents still choose to send their children abroad to complete their last few years of secondary or high school education. Following graduation, most expatriate students leave the country to attend university.

For parents keen on cultural integration, Kuwait’s primary and pre-schools increasingly offer the option of bilingual education, where classes are taught in Arabic and English.

Fees can vary significantly, depending on the chosen school and grade. Annual costs per child can range from KD300 ($1,060) to more than KD4,000 ($14,350), and schools often require a non-refundable fee to begin the registration process.

If you are planning a move to Kuwait with your children, it is advisable to get in touch with schools early on and aim to make your move coincide with either the summer holidays or the beginning of the new school year in September. The top schools often have waiting lists and it can be difficult to secure a place.
