Former transport minister to take over

Egypt’s Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq has resigned and former Transport Minister Essam Sharaf will take over.

According to an army statement, the governing military council has accepted Shafiq’s resignation.

Shafiq was appointed by former president Hosni Mubarak before he was ousted in February by a popular uprising.

Protesters in Egypt saw the appointment of Shafiq as unsatisfactory and the figure is considered too closely associated with Mubarak’s rule.
