Eleven prequalified for major sewerage tenders

06 June 2003
Eleven local companies have been prequalified to submit bids by 6 July for two major sewerage contracts. The larger of the two contracts, valued at KD 35 million ($116 million), involves an 80,000-cubic-metre expansion of the Jahra sewage treatment plant. The other, estimated to be worth KD 20 million-25 million ($66 million-83 million), calls for the renovation of about 20 kilometres of existing lines at Bneid al-Gar in Kuwait City. The client on both projects is the Ministry of Electricity & Water (MEW).

The Jahra project centres on expanding the existing treatment plant to 140,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d) from the existing 60,000 cm/d. The three-year contract also involves the construction of an inlet/outlet channel; the demolition of an existing sludge pumping station and replacement with a new combined stage pumping station; and the construction of a 23,000-cm/d balancing tank. The successful bidder will undertake civils and mechanical and electrical services. The local KEO International Consultantsis the consultant.

In addition to replacing existing lines, the Bneid al-Gar project calls for 13 kilometres of micro-tunnelling and related works. The consultant is a team of the US' Parsons Engineering Corporation with the local Gulf Consult.

Bids are also due to be submitted by 8 July for the Agaila sewerage processing and treatment project. The estimated KD 40 million ($133 million) contract involves the construction of a pumping station, solid waste treatment plant, a sanitary drainage network and related works (MEED 16:5:03).
