Emirates orders 32 Airbus A380s

The airline made the $11.5bn order at the Berlin Air Show

Dubai’s state-owned carrier Emirates Airline has ordered 32 more Airbus A380 aircraft from the European manufacturer at a cost of $11.5bn.

This latest order is in addition to the 48 A380 aircraft Emirates already has on order. The airline is scheduled to take delivery of all of the A380 aircraft by 2013 (MEED 12:5:10).

Emirates received its tenth Airbus A380 aircraft earlier this week.

In 2014, Emirates will also start to take delivery of the 70 Airbus A350 aircraft it has on order. The carrier has a total 146 aircraft on order worth $48bn.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates signed the deal with Airbus at the Berlin Airshow.

The airline is expected to announce further aircraft orders for Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft at the UK’s Farnborough International Airshow in July and is currently in discussions with both manufacturers.

The airline achieved a net profit of $964m for the financial year ending 31 March 2010, a 415 per cent increase on the net profit of $187m the airline recorded the previous year.

The carrier is also expanding its international network by adding new routes to Madrid, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Dakar, Prague and Baghdad in 2010.
