EXCLUSIVE: Egypt receives tramline design bids

Alexandria tramline is the second-oldest tramway in the world

Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) has received bids for the design and supervision works contract for the rehabilitation of Raml tramway in Alexandria.

MEED understands NAT received the bids in early December.

NAT tendered the contract in early 2018, but cancelled the tender in August after receiving bids in April.

The groups prequalified to bid for the contract were:

  • Artellia Ville & Transport (France) / Ingerop (France) / Menarail (local)
  • Sener Ingenieria Y Systemas (Spain)
  • Setec Group (France) / Khatib & Alami (Lebanon)
  • Systra (France) / Egis Rail (France) / Ace Consulting Engineers-Moharram/Bakhoum (local) / Projacs (local)
  • TPF Getinsa Euroestudios (Spain) / Arep (France) / Bureau Egyptien de Conseils Techniques (BECT) (Egypt)
  • Typsa (Spain) / ECG Engineering Consultants Group (local)

The original scope of work included:

  • Detailed design of civil and arrangement works
  • Evaluation of technical and financial proposals
  • Supporting the client in negotiations with selected bidders
  • Supervision of project implementation
  • Preparation of the operation and maintenance model

The tram network being rehabilitated is about 13.7 kilometres long, extending from Victoria station to Raml station, and then on to Manshya square. There are 28 stations overall.

The tramway began operating in the 1860s and is the second-oldest in the world.
