Oman Power & Water Procurement Company (OPWP) is planning to develop a wind-powered independent power project (IPP) in the southern Dhofar area of the sultanate.
OPWP has invited consultants to submit proposals for the supervisory consultancy role for the planned project by 3 June.
The project will be developed under a build-own-operate (BOO) model and is part of Oman’s efforts to diversify its fuel resources for power supply.
MEED reported in February that OPWP received prequalification entries from 28 firms for a planned 500MW photovoltaic (PV) solar project. The solar plant will be located at Ibri, about 300 kilometres inland from the capital city of Muscat.
The proposed wind IPP will be the second utility-scale wind project in the sultanate. In 2014, the UAE’s Masdar announced it was planning to develop a 50MW wind farm, also in Dhofar, in partnership with the local Rural Areas Electricity Company (Raeco).
Due to a number of delays in the design and procurement phase, the project is now due to be operational in 2020.
