New allegations of corruption heighten calls for re-vote to find new host country
In the wake of new allegations that Qatar was awarded the rights to host the 2022 Fifa World Cup on the back of $5m-worth of bribes, Fifa has announced that its investigation of Dohas successful bid will be completed by 9 June.
Confirmation that the long-awaited report will be completed soon comes amid a rising chorus of international calls for a new bid for 2022.
In light of the new allegations, Jim Boyce, the vice-president of Fifa, has said he would support a re-vote to find a new host for the tournament if the claims were proved to be accurate. UK government and football officials have also said a new vote should be held if the accusations are true.
Fifas probe is being chaired by former US Attorney General Michael Garcia. After months of interviewing witnesses and gathering materials, we intend to complete that phase of our investigation by 9 June and to submit a report to the Adjudicatory Chamber about six weeks thereafter, he said. The report will consider all evidence potentially related to the bidding process, including evidence collected from prior investigations.
Qatars World Cup Bid Committee, which ran the countrys successful campaign to host the World Cup, has denied any wrongdoing. The committee said it vehemently denied all allegations that were made in the recent reports of corruption in the bidding process. The committee added that it won the right to hold the football tournament because it was the best bid.
The committee also said it was cooperating fully with Fifas ongoing investigation and remained confident that any inquiry would conclude it won the bid to host the World Cup fairly.
