Iraq has a power generation capacity deficit of about 10,000MW
Switzerland-headquartered ABB has won a $30m contract to supply and install a substation at the 3,000MW Rumaila power plant in Iraqs Basra region.
ABB will design, engineer, supply and install the 400 kilovolt (kV) air insulated switchgear (AIS) substation. The substation will also be equipped with advanced digital control, protection and telecommunication systems, ABB said in a statement.
The completed power plant will be operated by the local Shamara Holding Group.
The Rumaila power plant contribute will 3,000MW to Iraqs current generation capacity of 13,000MW.
Iraq currently has a power deficit of about 10,000MW. This means electricity is available to Iraqs 34 million citizens for only about 15 hours each day, significantly hampering economic growth.
