Free Iraqi Forces general claims he is Baghdad mayor

17 April 2003
Jawdat al-Obeidi, a general in the Free Iraqi Forces (FIF), trained by the US and flown into central Iraq following the fall of Baghdad on 9 April, told reporters on 16 April that he had been elected mayor of Baghdad.

He said in a statement at the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad that tribal leaders and clerics from the Baghdad region had recently formed an executive council for the Iraqi capital and elected Mohamed Mohsen Zubaidi as its chief executive. Al-Obeidi said he had been based for more than 10 years in areas of northern Iraq controlled by Kurdish groups and that he was close to Ahmed Chalabi, president of the Iraqi National Congress (INC).
