The US’ GE has won a $500m contract to supply equipment to the captive power plant at the Emirates Aluminium (Emal) production facility near Al-Taweelah in Abu Dhabi.

The gas-fired power plant will use GE gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators and condensers.

Following completion of the first phase of the project, the plant will have an installed capacity of 2,000MW of electricity to be used in the production of 700,000 tonnes of aluminium a year. The second phase of the project will bring total production capacity to 1.4 million tonnes.

Canada’s SNC Lavalin and Australia’s Worley Parsons are the joint engineering, procurement and construction management contractors on the Emal project.
