H station work goes for bid

25 June 2004
Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) has released tender documents for the phase 2 development of H station at Al-Aweer. Contractors have been given until 21 August to submit bids for the contract, which involves the supply and installation of 400 MW of open-cycle turbine capacity at the existing 607-MW station (MEED 23:4:04).

DEWA is aiming to implement the project on a fast-track basis to meet a jump in power demand in the emirate. The utility is planning to have the extension completed by the summer of 2006, implying that the lump-sum turnkey (LSTK) contract will have to be awarded in the autumn. The consultant is the UK's Mott MacDonald.

The H station contract is the first of two major generation projects to be tendered by DEWA. Bid documents may be released as early as July for the other, phase 2 development, of Jebel Ali L, which calls for the supply and installation of 1,200 MW and 60 million gallons a day (g/d) of new capacity. DEWA is looking to commission the project in 2007. The consultant is Germany's Lahmeyer International(MEED 26:3:04).
