UAE/Australian contractor to construct housing and utilities on Upper Zakum artificial islands
The UAE/Australian Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG) has won a contract to build accommodation and utilities for workers at the Zakum Development Company’s (Zadco) Upper Zakum offshore oil field in Abu Dhabi.
The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract covers housing for 2,150 people on artificial islands being constructed to house crude processing trains, pipelines and other facilities.
HLG says the project, which also includes a kitchen, mess hall, clinic, laundry facilities and a mosque, offices and workshops, will be completed in August 2015.
The artificial islands are being constructed by the UAE’s National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC), while Abu Dhabi-based Al Jaber Energy Services won the contract for early civil works on the islands.
A consortium of Abu Dhabi’s National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) and French group Technip are expected to win the estimated $800m EPC contract for the offshore section of the Upper Zakum early production facilities, while seven contractors have bid for the onshore section.
