Hot mill contest down to two

Two bidders - Germany's SMS Demagand Austria's Voest Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (VAI)- have teamed up to proceed jointly on the bid for the Saudi Iron & Steel Company (Hadeed)project to expand the company's hot mill and hot skin pass mill. The tie-up reduces the number of bidders on the project to two, the other being Italy's Danieli & Company. A contract award on the project is now expected before the end of Ramadan in late November.

The project will raise capacity at the hot mill area from 800,000 tonnes a year (t/y) to 2 million t/y. Several other packages are out to tender at Hadeed's Jubail complex. including contracts to install a paint coating line with capacity to handle 150,000 t/y of flat products and a new 500,000-t/y rebar and wire rod mill respectively. VAI and Danieli are among the companies expected to bid for both contracts (MEED 26:9:03)
