Hamad Medical City will be built at Doha Asian Games site

Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has selected South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company for the hospital fit-out contract at its Hamad Medical City project  in Doha.

According to sources close to the project, Hyundai has been selected for the fit-out work, but a formal contract and the final value has not yet been finalised.

Hyundai are expected to officially be awarded the contract by the end of May.

The project involves converting buildings that were used as part of the athletes’ village for the 2006 Doha Asian Games into a hospital specialising in the treatment of ear, nose and throat diseases.

Ashghal had asked bidders to submit a tender bond of QR200m ($55m), suggesting a contract value of about QR4bn.

The Hamad Medical City project covers an area of 450,000 square metres and includes three hospitals with more than 1,000 beds. It also includes a 40-bed day-care unit, a 300-bed nursing home and dialysis clinic, a National Health Authority office building, residential structures, an education centre and recreational facilities.

US-based Hill International is the project manager on the scheme.

Hyundai has also won a QR1.56bn ($428m) contract from local developer Dohaland, in a joint venture with the local HBK Contracting Company, to build phase 1a of its Musheireb development in Doha.

The initial phase includes the construction of the Diwan Amiri Quarter, which includes the Diwan Annex, Amiri Guard and the National Archive, plus a heritage quarter that includes the Eid prayer ground and four heritage houses.

The total built-up area of the buildings is about 144,000 square metres.

Last month, Cat International Qatar, part of Lebanon’s Contracting & Trading (Cat) was awarded an estimated QR530m ($146m) infrastructure deal for phase 1a.

Germany’s Bauer is working on the enabling works package for phase 1a (MEED 8:3:10).
