India-based McNally Bharat Engineering Company (MBE) and its Omani partner, EMC Group, have won a $315m contract to build a bitumen refinery in Sohar, Oman.

The deal was awarded by Sohar Bitumen, which is planning a facility to produce bitumen using feedstock from the expanded Sohar oil refinery in northern Oman.

“The share of MBE in the order will be $157m. The delivery period of the project is 24 months from the date of receipt of advance from the customer,” MBE said in a filing on India’s Bombay Stock Exchange.

Also known as asphalt, bitumen is produced during the oil refining process and is mainly used in road construction. The facility is expected to meet the sultanate’s total demand for bitumen, which it has been importing.

The refinery is expected to start production in 2017.
