WINNER GCC INDUSTRIAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR
UAE
Emirates Aluminium Smelter Complex
Entrant: SNC Lavalin
Project owner: Emirates Aluminium Company Limited (Emal)
Project contractor: SNC Lavalin/WorleyParsons
Description: The project covers an area of 6 square kilometres and consists of an aluminium smelter with a production capacity of 740,000 tonnes a year and a 2,036MW power plant. It is the largest industrial project in the UAE outside the oil and gas sector and showcases the cooperation between the emirates of Abu Dhabi, represented by Mubadala Development Company, and Dubai, represented by Dubai Aluminium. During the project’s construction, white sand habitats were preserved and Emal was one of the first companies in Abu Dhabi to implement a site-wide fauna translocation project. The project required 90 million man-hours and employed 18,000 workers during the peak of its construction. It was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget.
