Iran and Indonesia sign refinery deal

11 March 2008
Iran signed a deal on 11 March to set up a 300,000-barrel-a-day (b/d) oil refinery in Indonesia as part of a joint venture between the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Indonesian state oil firm Pertamina.

The two countries also agreed on contracts to construct a 360,000 b/d plant to refine gas liquids in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas and a 1 million tonnes-a-year urea plant in southern Iran.

The signing ceremony came after Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrived in Tehran yesterday for a three-day visit to improve bilateral relations.

Indonesia abstained in a vote last week on a new UN sanctions resolution against Iran but advised Tehran to increase its co-operation with the UN nuclear watchdog to avoid further controversy.
