Iraq to tender power and water projects

Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Iraqi government signed a loan agreement worth over $770m in 2017

Iraq is about to launch  the procurement process for contracts to rehabilitate fixed and mobile substations in Anbar, Baghdad and surrounding areas.

Tender documents are currently being prepared for the contract to rehabilitate the mobile substations, while the selection process for the design and supervision consultants for the fixed substations are underway.

The two contracts are financed by Tokyo-based Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).

Jica signed the $235m loan agreement that covers both packages in October last year.

Jica also signed in October a second loan agreement, valued at $452m, for the construction of water supply plants and networks in Salah al-Din and Diyala.

It is understood that the government is currently reviewing the project plans as well as the sub-projects.

A Jica representative told MEED on the sidelines of the Kuwait International Conference on Reconstruction of Iraq that there are no plans to commit further loans or grants to Iraq, apart from those signed last year.

The war with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (Isis) severely damaged the power and water infrastructure in many of the country. The Iraqi government has appealed for help from the international community to address the major funding gap across its key sectors through loans, grants, public-private partnerships (PPPs) and foreign direct investments.
