Jordan to spend $700m to move Aqaba port 20km south

07 February 2008

An agency of the Jordanian government has announced it will spend $700m on the project to move the port of Aqaba some 20km to the south, in the biggest infrastructure project in the history of the kingdom.

Aqaba Development Corporation will call for expressions of interest from companies to be involved in the scheme in late February or early March.

The relocation of Aqaba will be “the single most important project undertaken in Jordan,” said Imad Fakhoury, the chief executive of Aqaba Development Corporation.

He said the plan to build a world class port will help transform Aqaba into a leading business and leisure destination on the Red Sea, as well as a gateway to the wider region.

Some 90 companies have talked to the corporation about becoming involved in the project.

The project has three main elements. A deeper port will be built at the new facility, which lies next to the border with Saudi Arabia. A second port will be developed at the site and the waterfront of the old Aqaba port will be redeveloped.
