WINNER KIMMCO GCC SUSTAINABLE PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Oman
Nimr Produced Water Treatment Project
Entrant: Bauer Nimr
Project owner: Bauer Nimr/Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)
Project contractor: Bauer Nimr
Engineering consultant: Bauer Nimr
Architect: Bauer Nimr
Description: In 2005, Oman’s environmental authorities banned the disposal of oil-contaminated produced water into shallow aquifers due to the risk of polluting the sultanate’s drinking water. As a result, PDO had to carry out energy-intensive deep-water well injections. In a remote desert environment with limited power supply, PDO decided to look for alternative solutions. Having developed more than 1,000 natural reed bed water treatment systems around the world, Bauer Nimr was awarded a contract in 2008 to design, construct and operate one of the world’s largest commercial natural produced water treatment systems. The project has contributed to improvements in the 120,000-140,000-barrel-a-day Nimr oil fields. Care was taken to monitor the potential environmental impact of the treatment facility on the local flora and fauna during both construction and operation. Methods were also tailored to the specific needs of the project, including the health, safety, security and environmental requirements of PDO.
UAE
Dubai Metro Green Line
Entrant: Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) – Rail Agency
Project owner: RTA – Rail Agency
Project contractor: DURL Construction Consortium
Engineering consultant: Systra/Parsons
Architect: Aedas
Engineer: Atkins
Description: As Dubai grows, the RTA’s vision has been to provide a mode of public transport that is safe and easy to use, while posing minimum risk to the environment. An environmental impact assessment study was carried out for the Green Line metro project, on which a construction environment management plan (CEMP) was developed. Several mitigation measures were considered prior to the start of the project to control, minimise and avoid the environmental impact. Measurements were taken regularly to ensure that set limits were not exceeded in areas such as air quality, dust emissions, gaseous emissions, noise, vibration, soil and water quality, and safe handling and disposal of waste.
