Kuwait cuts construction period for terminal

16 February 2017

Project was originally set for completion in 2022

Kuwait’s $4.3bn Terminal 2 is now expected to be completed in 2020 instead of 2022.

This follows a new commitment made by Turkey’s Limak, the lead contractor, to reduce the execution timeline of the project from six to four years, according to a local media report.

“The Emir has expressed that he wants the airport to be ready within four years,” a source familiar with the project tells MEED.

Discussions on the specific details of how the project can be completed within four years will now have to be undertaken by Limak and the client, the Public Works Ministry (MPW).

An MPW spokesperson has previously said that the six-year timeline could even be delayed unless “civil and military installations on the site were removed.”

The construction contract for the terminal was awarded in July 2016. It has a design capacity of up to 25 million passengers annually.

Apart from Terminal 2, construction is underway for a temporary passenger support building at the airport. The facility, expected to be completed in mid-2018, will help decongest the existing airport until Terminal 2 is completed.

Several airside and landside packages, include taxiways, aircraft stands and car parks, are expected to be tendered over the coming two to three years in addition to an airport road package.

The shortened execution timeline, however, could mean these tenders will be released sooner.
