Emir accepts prime minister’s notice of resignation

Kuwait Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has accepted the offer for the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak al-Hamad al-Sabah’s government.

The emir issued an order on 30 October accepting the resignation of the cabinet, shortly after the resignation had been submitted by the premier.

The speaker of Kuwait’s National Assembly, Marzouq al-Ghanim, said, in comments to local press that he would not call for parliamentary meetings until a new government is formed. Al-Ghanim had said on 26 October that there was a “high chance” the government would resign on 30 October.

The resignation of the government was triggered by opposition MPs putting increasing pressure on the government regarding allegations of mismanagement. The latest government had been formed in February, with the country frequently reshuffling its cabinet.
