Kuwait government sworn in

12 January 2009

A new Kuwaiti government has been sworn in, with Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah returning to the post of prime minister which he vacated in November and Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah taking on the key role of acting oil minister.

The new cabinet took the constitutional oath on 12 January in front of Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

The new cabinet consists of:

  • Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, first deputy premier and defence minister

  • Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, deputy premier, foreign minister and acting oil minister

  • Faisal Mohammad Al-Hajji Bukhadhour, deputy premier and state minister for cabinet affairs

  • Ahmad Yaqoub Baqer Al-Abdullah, minister of commerce and industry and state minister for national assembly affairs

  • Bader Fahad Ali Al-Duwaila, minister of social affairs and labour

  • Lieutenant General Jaber Khalid Jaber Al-Sabah, minister of the interior

  • Hussein Nasser Al-Huraiti, minister of justice and minister of Awqaf and Islamic affairs

  • Roudhan Abdulaziz Al-Roudhan, health minister

  • Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, information minister

  • Fadhil Safar Ali Safar, minister of public works and state minister for municipal affairs

  • Mustafa Jassem Al-Shimali, finance minister

  • Moudhi Abdulaziz Al-Humoud, state minister for housing affairs and state minister for development affairs

  • Nabil Khalaf Saeed bin Salama, minister of electricity and water and minister of communications

  • Nouriya Subeeh Barrak Al-Subeeh, minister of education and minister of higher education.

  • Few changes have been made from the cabinet which resigned on 25 November 2008 to avoid questioning over measures taken by the government to combat the global financial crisis. However, one key change is Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah taking over from Mohammad al-Olaim as head of the oil ministry.

The government’s resignation in November was the second of 2008, with the previous cabinet appointed in May.
