Kuwait major water injection scheme pushed back

02 March 2008

State upstream operator Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has extended the bid deadline by 6 weeks to 14 April for its effluent water and seawater injection facilities project, the largest upstream contract currently out to bid in the state.

The deadline extension came at the request of the 11 prequalified international contractors to allow them more time to bid the work. The shortlisted firms include GS Engineering & Construction and SK Engineering & Construction, both of South Korea, Italy’s Snamprogetti, Paris-based Technip, JGC Corporation of Japan, Spain’s TR and the US’ Foster Wheeler (MEED

The estimated $650m-750m engineering, procurement and construction contract covers the phase-1 construction of an effluent water injection plant and effluent collection and treatment facilities at the northern Sabriyah and Rawdhatain oil fields, and the second-phase construction of a seawater injection facility (MEED 12:10:07).

The scope of works involves: the expansions of gathering centres (GCs) 15, 23 and 25 and their associated transfer pipelines to each handle 200,000 barrels a day (b/d) of effluent water; the expansion of capacity at the seawater treatment plant at Subiya to 500,000 b/d of water from 300,000 b/d; the expansion of the central injection pumping facility (CIPF); and the tie-in of the GC 24 effluent pipeline with the CIPF.

Oil, associated gas and water output from the Rawdhatain and Sabriyah fields will be separated at each GC, with the gas sent to compression and the oil transferred to desalting units. The effluent water will be transferred to the CIPF, where it will be treated and mixed with seawater before being reinjected back into the wells.

The scheme will help maintain production from the fields by reinjecting the water to maintain reservoir pressure. KOC says it will be able to process 640,000 b/d of effluent water once the project is completed. Dealing with rising water production levels are a priority for the state as its fields age.
