The local Utilities Development Company (UDC) is awaiting government approval for the expansion of the Sulaibiya wastewater treatment plant.
With a capacity of 425,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d), the existing Sulaibiya facility is the largest wastewater treatment and reclamation plant in the world.
The planned extension would increase capacity at the site to 600,000 cm/d.
The Sulaibiya site houses two plants - a wastewater treatment plant and an ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis plant, which cleans effluent to drinking water standards.
Talks between UDC and the Public Works Ministry will determine whether the expansion will be configured to treat effluent to the same standard, or to lower levels.
The existing Sulaibiya plant began operation in 2004.
UDC is a joint venture of the local Mohammad Abdulmohsin Kharafi & Sons, the US’ GE Ionics and the UK’s United Utilities.
