A key person involved in the development of the region’s downstream aluminium sector

Biography: Laurent Schmitt started his career in the downstream aluminium industry working as an engineer for flat-rolled products and extruded products.

He joined Alba as CEO in January 2010. Prior to this, he worked at French chemicals giant Rhodia, where he was president of Rhodia Polyamide, the global engineering plastics business of the group. He oversaw production and sales at 14 plants around the world.

Prior to joining Rhodia, Schmitt worked for 15 years with aluminium producer Pechiney Group. As CEO of Alba, the oldest aluminium smelter in the Gulf, Schmitt plays a vital role in ensuring the metals park surrounding the 870,000-tonnes a year (t/y) facility is fully supplied with ingots, billets and molten aluminium.

The metals park is a fundamental part of Bahrain’s industrial diversification plans and Alba’s plans to expand production will help increase output at the park.
