Smoke from the burning oil terminal was visable from space
Libya has extinguished the fires burning at the countrys biggest oil terminal, El-Sider, officials said on Friday.
The fires started on 25 December when a rocket hit one of the tanks. At least six storage tanks caught fire producing a plume of smoke that could be seen from space.
El-Sider and the nearby Ras Lanuf terminal have a combined capacity of 560,000 barrels a day (b/d) and have been closed since 13 December due to fighting between armed groups that support the countrys two rival governments.
Currently, Libyas internationally recognised government is based in the small eastern city of Tubrok, while an unelected, Islamist-led government controls Libyas capital, Tripoli.
