Libyan oil output increases amid escalating fighting

Exports may be damaged by increasing unrest as heavy fighting causes extensive disruption

Libya’s oil production has doubled over the last two weeks rising to nearly 600,000 barrels a day, according to the country’s National Oil Corporation.

The increase in exports comes after the government took back control of two of Libya’s largest oil terminals from rebels and restarted operations at El-Sharara, one of the country’s largest oil fields.

The ramping up of production may well be shortlived due to increasing unrest in the country. All of Libya’s major airports have been forced to close due to heavy fighting between rival armed groups. A spokesman for the government says it has discussed asking for outside military assistance.
