The local Commodore Contracting Company has won a contract to build a 600-bed hospital in Abu Dhabi.

Burjeel Hospital, a part of VPS Healthcare Group, has awarded the AED1bn ($272m) contract. The eight-floor project has a delivery time of 30 months and when finished will have a built-up area of 100,000 square metres. 

Burjeel is reported to have embarked on a $1.5bn expansion in the UAE’s capital over the next three years and plans to open four hospitals, five speciality centres and 10 medical centres. Construction of 400-bed Burjeel Medical City in Mohammed bin Zayed City will cost AED1.4bn and it is expected to be ready in the next two years.

Local and international private hospital groups have been expanding in the UAE to capitalize on increasing demand of healthcare services as populatiYear on soars in the country. South Africa’s Mediclinic is planning Mediclinic Parkview Hospital, a 150-bed hospital in Dubai’s Al-Quoz area. The 500,000 square feet project will cost $191m and is scheduled to be completed in 2018.

The largest healthcare project in the capital is being developed by Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada). It opened bids from contractors in March 2014 for the contract to build Sheikh Khalifa Medical City. The low bidder is the local/Australian Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG), with a price of about AED3.9bn ($1.1bn).
