Local contractor wins Dubai hotel construction deal

01 February 2016

New hotel will be built on Jumeirah Beach Road

The local Al-Basti & Muktha has been awarded an estimated AED700m ($190m) deal for the construction of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Dubai.

Located on Jumeirah Beach Road looking out to the Gulf, the hotel will have 200 rooms and suites, and 12 villas.

The engineering consultancy is the local Dar Consult. The interior designer is Kuala Lumpur-based Jeffrey Wilkes. The project is owned by Dubai Real Estate Corporation (DREC) and the local Wasl Hospitality is the development manager.

Last year, Wasl CEO Hesham Abdulla al-Qasim said the firm plans to open 15 hotels in Dubai by 2019.

Other government-controlled clients in the emirate are developing hotels. The largest is the expansion of the Atlantis resort on the Palm Jumeiah. The project owner, the Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD), selected a joint venture of South Korea’s Ssangyong Engineering Corporation and the local/Belgian Bel Hasa Six Construct for an early works contract on the scheme at the end of 2015. A main contract award is expected to be signed by the joint venture by the second quarter of this year.
