Work will involve building rail and road bridges

A joint venture of the local Al-Mabani General Contractors and the local Al-Arrab Contracting has been awarded an estimated SR1bn ($266m) subcontract on the Haramain high-speed railway project in Saudi Arabia.

The work will involve building rail bridges, road bridges, tunnels and other associated works in Jeddah including building a viaduct at station 76 of the Haramain railway in Jeddah. A rail bridge with a total length of 640 metres and an underpass tunnel with a total length of about 340m are also included in the package. The joint venture will also re-arrange the existing King Abdullah interchange, located south of station 76.

The joint venture will also reconstruct the current road bridge crossing the Haramain highway. The new road bridge will have a total length of 1,200m.

The joint venture was awarded the subcontract by the Al-Rajhi Alliance, the consortium which was awarded the first SR6.8bn civil works package on the first phase of the Haramain rail project in 2009.

The Haramain high-speed railway will run between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia and also Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City. The railway is being developed by the Saudi Railways Organisation (SRO).

In October last year a largely Spanish consortium led by the local Al-Shoula Group was awarded an estimated $7.9bn contract for phase two of the Haramain high-speed railway.
