Malaysian JV snaps up Dukhan highway package

15 July 2005
A Malaysian joint venture of Gamudaand WCTwas awarded in early July a QR 750 million ($206 million) contract to carry out the first package on the Dukhan highway upgrade programme. The Dukhan package is the second major award to be made by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) under its highways upgrade programme (MEED 27:5:05).

The two-year contract calls for the construction of 43-kilometres of four-lane dual carriageway from Al-Shahanaya to Zekreet, with five grade-separated interchanges and camel underpasses. About five groups of bidders were shortlisted for the contract. The new highway will replace the existing singled-lane Dukhan highway. The design consultant on the Dukhan highway upgrade is the UK's Atkins.

The local Darwish Engineeringwas awarded in May a QR 207 million ($57 million) contract for the first package on the North road scheme. On the Doha expressway scheme, the client has decided to merge two packages already tendered and has issued a new request for bids. For the merged tender, 22 February street/Al-Emar, the bid closing date has been set for 24 August.
