Maqbool bin Ali bin Sultan
Position: Chairman, Oman Oil Company; Minister of Commerce & Industry
Biography: Maqbool bin Ali bin Sultan became chairman of Oman Oil Company (OOC) in January 1996 and has been instrumental in forming partnerships with private sector companies to develop gas-based industrial projects and other downstream energy projects.
He signs all joint venture deals involving OOC, notably the 2004 partnership agreements with US-based Dow Chemical for the construction of a polyethylene complex at Sohar industrial port zone, which will produce up to 1 million tonnes a year of polyethylene for export to the Middle East, Europe and Asia.
As minister of commerce and industry since 1991, he has been instrumental in the privatisation of the power sector, encouraging local and foreign investors to build gas-fired plants. He also played a key role in the inauguration of the two gas pipelines that supply the industrial zones of Sohar and Salalah.
