Local developer Meraas Development has shelved the development of two of its tower projects in Dubai. South Korea’s Samsung Corporation has stopped providing pre-construction services for the 600-metre-plus tower on the AED350bn ($95bn) Jumeira Gardens development.
The tower, known as 1-Dubai, would have been one of the tallest in the world.
The design is for three separate structures with glass and aluminium-mesh cladding linked by bridges that contain suspended apartments.
Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill, who also designed the Burj Dubai, are the designers. A joint venture led by Samsung is building the Burj Dubai.
Meraas is also understood to have shelved plans for a high-rise office building on Sheikh Zayed road.
The local developer received at least three bids for a contract to design and build the 68-floor tower, which would have been located near the Dusit hotel close to the first interchange (MEED 21:11:08).
The bidders were the joint venture of the local Al-Habtoor Engineering Enterprises with South Africa's Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East); the local Arabtec Construction; and the local/Australian Nasa Multiplex.
Meraas was also planning a number of other high-profile buildings as part of its masterplan for Jumeira Gardens. These are now understood to have been shelved after the programme manager for Jumeira Gardens, US-based CH2M Hill, stopped work on the project in December.
