Saadiyat Construction Village
Entrant: Leighton Contracting (Abu Dhabi) LLC
Project owner: Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC)
Project contractor: Leighton Contracting (Abu Dhabi) LLC
Engineering consultant: Leighton Contracting (Abu Dhabi) LLC
Architect: Surbana International
Description: Saadiyat Construction Village (SCV) was built to house 20,000 workers employed by contractors during the construction phase of the Saadiyat Island development in Abu Dhabi. SCV should encourage government and private sector investment in the region through the provision of best-practice accommodation. It uses steel-framed modular building construction, with standardised components to simplify and minimise errors in the fabrication and installation process. For complex engineering packages, such as the sewage treatment plant, subcontractors were selected according to their ability to carry out the works. The selected firms were then required to operate and maintain the facilities for a period prior to handover to the TDIC.
