Supervision package required and under discussion
Construction work on the $4.3bn Kuwait International airport (KIA) Terminal 2 is expected to commence in early September, following the expected completion of the 90-day project mobilisation period.
Turkeys Limak Construction, which won the contract, is understood to have begun holding talks with a group of banks to fund the scheme in November 2015.
Sources requesting anonymity told MEED in November that the lenders could end up financing close to $2bn, or close to 50 per cent, of the total project cost.
Kuwaits Ministry of Public Works (MPW) is the owner of the scheme, which will be constructed on the southern side of the existing terminal. Construction work is expected to last six years.
A supervision package is understood to be currently under discussion between MPW and Limak. However, it is not clear how soon the tender for this package will be released to the market.
It is also understood the Council of Ministers and the independent Audit Bureau, which previously rejected the contract award due to the "high cost", have agreed to approve the project prior to the contract signing in May.
We do not foresee any potential issue in terms of releasing the budget, a source familiar with the project tells MEED.
