Position: Governor, Bank of Algeria

Biography: Mohammed Laksaci has been governor of the Bank of Algeria, the country’s central bank, since June 2001, a position that also requires him to act as president of the Credit and Monetary Council and of the Banking Commission.

The role of the Bank of Algeria is to maintain favourable monetary, credit and foreign exchange conditions to support the development of the Algerian economy, as well as to oversee and enforce banking and financial services operating rules. In September last year, Laksaci was elected head of the assembly of governors of the Association of African Central Banks (AACB).

The AACB aims to promote and organise economic cooperation between African countries on a range of monetary and financial issues. Laksaci has a doctorate degree in economics from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium.
