As a result of a charter agreement between the national carrier Iraqi Airways and the Abu Dhabi-based charter carrier Jupiter Airlines, Mosul has re-established an aviation link with the UAE.
The airport, in the north of Iraq, has undergone a $100m refit over the last 18 months and reopened for its first commercial flight in 14 years in December 2008.
The airport has been substantially rebuilt in a co-operative effort between the US State Department and the Iraqi government (MEED 4:12:08).
Since then, the airport’s only international services have been charter flights for pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.
