Muscat requests proposals for Barka 3 and Sohar 2 power projects

14 July 2009

Oman Power & Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has issued a request for proposals for the planned Barka 3 and Sohar 2 independent power projects (IPPs).

The deadline for bids is 19 October and tender documents will be available until 19 August.

Each combined-cycle power plant will have capacity of 650MW. The winning developer will need to provide 375MW of early power by April 2012 and the plants are due to begin commercial operations by May 2012.

OPWP will buy the electricity from the plants under a 15-year power purchase agreement.

Developers and contractors submitted expressions of interest for the schemes in mid-May. OPWP did not launch a separate prequalification process. Instead, bidders will need to meet certain qualification criteria laid out in the request for proposals (MEED 26:6:09).
