Nakheel seeks bids for Deira Islands coastline project

Up to nine new beaches to be built at man-made island development

Dubai developer Nakheel has floated a tender for the design and construction of a new coastline at its Deira Islands development.

The developer said the Deira Islands project will be distinguished by a new coastline that will consist of integrated leisure beaches, revetment frontages, headlands and quay walls that will provide pedestrian access around the perimeter of the four interlinked islands.

Contractors will be bidding to execute stage one of the coastline scheme, which covers the two near-shore islands.

The scope of work entails the following:

  • Placing and profiling of up to nine new beaches;
  • Construction of new coastal structures, including breakwaters, revetments and quay walls;
  • Completion or modification of existing coastal structures, including breakwaters, revetments and quay walls;
  • Additional land reclamation;
  • Earthworks.

The bid deadline for the tender is 14 August.

In October, the developer announced plans to build on four of the reclaimed islands, which were originally dredged as part of the abandoned Palm Deira project. Nakheel said the islands will be mixed-use and will add an additional 40 kilometres of beach to Dubai’s coastline.

Last month, Nakheel issued a tender for roadworks on the development. The scope of work entails construction of roads on about 860 hectares of land on islands A and B of the scheme.

The bridges will connect Deira Islands with the Bur Dubai side of the Dubai Creek in the Shindagha area. Nakheel and Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) are working on the scheme together.

Work is still ongoing on the bridge connecting the mainland to Deira Islands, which was originally planned as an access bridge for the Palm Deira project.

In 2008, the local/Belgian Bel Hasa Six Construct was awarded a AED300m ($81.7m) contract to build the access bridge by the RTA. The bridge will be 400 metres long with six lanes in each direction. US-based Parsons International is the consultant. Bel Hasa Six Construct’s contract is understood to be nearing completion. Nakheel provided the funding for the bridge, while the RTA managed the design and the construction.

In April, Nakheel awarded contracts for design and supervision services on its Deira Islands project.

The developer has appointed US-based AE7 for the design and supervision services, which includes masterplanning and infrastructure design for the new 15.3 square-kilometre waterfront city, under a deal worth AED28m.

AE7 was also awarded another contract worth AED19.5m covering architectural and engineering services for the Night market and The Board Walk, two main attractions on the 4.5 million-square-metre south island. The creekside destination will be accessible from the mainland by road bridges and abras. The island’s other attractions will include a large shopping mall, an amphitheatre for 30,000 people and a marina that can accommodate large yachts.
