New malls part of rapid expansion of Nakheel’s retail portfolio

Dubai-based Nakheel has announced plans to build two new shopping malls in the emirate as part of a rapid expansion of its retail portfolio.

The first property, a one million square feet regional mall in Jumeirah Village Triangle, will feature a 15-screen cinema, an 80,000 square feet hypermarket, an entertainment area, a department store and a selection of retailers, restaurants and cafes. Located on Al-Khail road, the mall will serve Nakheel’s communities including Al-Furjan, Jumeirah Park, and Jumeirah Village.

The second project, a 500,000 square feet mall in Jumeirah Village Circle, will also contain cinemas, a large supermarket in addition to a variety of retailers, restaurants and cafes.

The developer said designers will be appointed shortly for the new malls, which are among several new Nakheel retail projects under way. The company is also building Nakheel Mall on Palm Jumeirah, a new mall on Deira Islands, extensions to Dragon Mart and Ibn Battuta and a number of neighbourhood shopping centres in its communities.

In February, the local Actco General Contracting submitted a low bid of AED1.185bn ($323m) for the contract to build the Nakheel Mall.

Also in February, Nakheel awarded an AED375m contract to the local Gulf Technical Construction Company, a subsidiary of the local Drake & Scull, to build The Pointe at Palm Jumeirah.

The Pointe, Nakheel’s AED800m, 136,000 square metre retail and entertainment complex, will be located at the tip of Palm Jumeirah, opposite Atlantis, and is scheduled for completion in 2016. The project includes a mix of shopping, dining and entertainment facilities, along with a fountain display.
