Nama contracts signed

The local Arabian Industrial Development Company (Nama) formally awarded on 8 February key engineering and construction contracts for the project to build a new chemicals plant in Jubail with capacity of 50,000 tonnes a year (t/y) of caustic soda, 45,000 t/y of calcium chloride, 30,000 t/y of epichlorohydrin (EPI) and 23,000 t/y of hydrogen chloride (MEED 21:1:05).

The UK office of the US' Foster Wheeler and Italy's Saipem were appointed to provide engineering services and engineering, procurement and construction services (EPCS) respectively. Contracts were also awarded to Turkey's Akkim to carry out the project's chlor-alkali portion on a lump-sum turnkey (LSTK) basis. Germany's GEA Messo will provide the technology for the calcium chloride unit. The project is estimated to cost SR 690 million ($175 million) and is targeted for start-up in May 2007. The facilities will be operated under the name Hassad Petrochemical Company.
