Biography: Nasser Marafih has been CEO of Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and Qtel International since 2002.

He joined the company in 1992 as a consultant, participating in the introduction of the Middle East’s first GSM service. In the same year, he was appointed director of strategic planning and development, leading initiatives such as the introduction of the internet services in Qatar in 1996. Marafih played a key role in the privatisation of Qtel in 1998.

He has been instrumental in expanding Qtel, leading the acquisition of a majority stake in Kuwait’s Wataniya in 2007. Wataniya has operations in both Iraq and North Africa. Marafih previously worked for the University of Qatar in 1986 as a researcher, lecturer and later assistant professor in the department of electrical engineering.

Marafih holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in telecommunications engineering from George Washington University in the US.
