New capacity at Khor al-Zubair port

16 April 2004
South Iraq Container Terminal (SICT)has completed the dredging of berths 7 and 8 at the Khor al-Zubair (KAZ) port, located eight kilometres north of Umm Qasr on the Shatt al-Arab waterway. The work carried out by local dredgers for the Iraqi Port Authority (IPA) has deepened the alongside depth for both berths to 11 metres.

The Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) is close to awarding a contract to dredge crude oil export berths 9, 10 and 11 at the port down to a depth of 11 metres.

The port comprises 13 berths along a 2.5-kilometre-long quay. SICT is a subsidiary of Denmark's Maersk, which has a five-year operating agreement for the port with the UK-led coalition in the south.

In early April, the port docked the 240-metre-long Maersk Alaska, the biggest container vessel to visit Iraq since reconstruction work began in May (MEED 16:1:04).
