New management for SIPC

Sohar Industrial Port Company (SIPC)has appointed Jan Meijer as its new chief executive officer. He replaces Bert Kruk who is taking up the post of senior port specialist with the World Bank in Washington. Meijer will be joined at SIPC by Jamal Tawfiq Aziz, who takes over as deputy chief executive officer. Aziz is presently acting as director-general of ports and maritime affairs at the Transport & Communications Ministry. Both appointments will come into effect from 1 October.

SIPC is a 50:50 joint venture (JV) between the government and Rotterdam Municipal Port Managementof the Netherlands. The company signed in July the JV agreement to manage the port. The Port of Sohar, which is approaching completion, will serve as the sultanate's major industrial port. The first commercial vessels are expected to dock this year. The port will serve the burgeoning petrochemicals and industrial schemes that are planned for the area (Oman, MEED Special Report, 26:4:02, pages 35-36).
