New prime minister appointed in Syria

10 September 2003
President Basher Asad has appointed Mohammed Naji al-Otari as the new prime minister. Al-Otari, speaker of the Syrian parliament, will lead a new government in the country. The resignation of the departing prime minister, Mohammed Mero, was expected after Asad said that a more reformist government was needed.

Many analysts expected sweeping reforms in Syria after the death of Hafiz Asad in June 2000. However, reform has been slow under Al-Otari's government. Changes in the banking system and the release of political prisoners have taken place, but there have been few major signs of any marked political or economic liberalisation.
