NOC awards two more gas exploration licences

13 December 2007
State-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC) has awarded two more contracts in the country’s first international gas round, according to a senior industry source in Tripoli.

Occidental Petroleum from the US was the only bidder for a block in the southwest of the Sirte basin, the country’s largest oil and gas field.

RWE from Germany submitted the only bid for the Cyrenaica block in the northeast of the country.

“There is a clause in the bid round that enables NOC to reject bids where there is only one bidder, but both have been awarded,” says the local head of an international oil company.

NOC awarded four other gas exploration contracts on 9 December.

Six blocks received no bids (MEED 10:12:07).
