North Beach goes public

07 May 2004
Plans to build a major new resort, north of West Bay, were unveiled by chief executive officer of Qatar AirwaysAkbar al-Baker in early May. Known as the North Beach resort, the project calls for the construction of a 32 square-kilometre mixed-used development with 10 hotels, 3,000 houses, 12,000 apartments and over 300,000 square metres of retail space. North Beach, which will be located along 8.5 kilometres of shoreline, is the second major resort project planned in the West Bay area. In early April, on-site construction began on the estimated $2,500 million Pearl of the Gulf island project (MEED 9:4:04).

The US' Bechtelhas carried out the concept masterplan for North Beach and is preparing to begin work on a more detailed masterplan, which will also include site and environmental investigations. Details on the implementation strategy for the project are expected to be announced over the coming three months.

Al-Baker said that Doha's infrastructure and tourism investment plan calls for $15,000 million-22,000 million to be spent on a wide range of projects over the next 10 years and for the number of business and leisure visitors to the state to rise to more than 1 million in 2010 from about 400,000 this year.

The centrepiece of the infrastructure programme will be the new $2,500 million Doha International Airport. To keep pace with rising visitor numbers, a total of eight four- and five-star hotels have been built or are under construction. 'At least the same number of hotels of the same class are being developed,' Al-Baker said.
